Allow your kids to play detective alongside Sherlock Gnomes and Watson in the animated family-friendly comedy film from Paramount Pictures that opens today, March 23rd.

Strong Voice Over Cast

Fans of the prequel, “Gnomeo & Juliet”, will appreciate that both James McAvoy and Emily Blunt are returning to their lead characters. Joining the voice cast are more A-list talent such as Johnny Depp (Sherlock Gnomes), Mary J. Blige (Irene), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Watson), and Michael Caine (Lord Redbrick) just to name a few. I can’t help but think that Elton John being the Executive Producer had some kind of influence there :). Hello! It’s Sir Elton John! Btw, he also composed a good amount of the songs played throughout the movie.

Movie Background

Following the animated movie prequel “Gnomeo & Juliet”, both lead characters are back on the big screen, but playing very different characters this time around given the circumstances. While “Gnomeo & Juliet” was about their relationship and forbidden love story, “Sherlock Gnomes” is more of a crime and mystery movie.  The movie begins with the gnomes relocating to the gardens of London, where Gnomeo and Juliet are now married. However, their relationship took a back seat once they were given the responsibility of being the new leaders of the garden community. Both were feeling different things: Gnomeo felt neglected by his partner and Juliet felt overwhelmed with her new responsibilities. This eventually led to an argument outside the garden, which was when their community of gnomes were mysteriously kidnapped. Unsure of where to start, Gnomeo and Juliet bump into Sherlock Gnomes and Watson and from there they work together on solving the mystery of the missing gnomes.

Sherlock Gnomes’ Life Lesson for Kids

This movie goes beyond just entertaining the viewers with humor, adventure and detailed animations. There is a focus around relationships that the audience can relate to in real life. This becomes obvious in the beginning when Juliet suddenly becomes more focused on the garden than her relationship with Gnomeo. Without giving away too much from the movie, you’ll see how relationships can sometimes get difficult and how it’s important to appreciate the ones you love. Often times people take others for granted without even realizing it until it’s too late.

I also found Juliet to be refreshing as a female lead character. She not only demonstrated leadership skills and bravery, but she never gave up and was open to adventure. Definitely a character I wouldn’t mind exposing my daughter to.

Having Fun With DIY Gnome Hats

The kids and I were so excited once we got our invite that we made sure to dress up like Gnomes with a simple #momhack! By simply placing a plastic/foam cup on your head and covering it with a beanie, you can have your own “free standing” gnome hat!! Who cares if we were the only ones dressed up for the screening event. My kids felt cool and festive, I felt clever with my DIY gnome hats, and we all had a great time watching the movie :D.

Hope you all decide to take your families to watch “Sherlock Gnomes” this weekend! The kids will laugh, you will laugh, and everyone will go home appreciating each other more. Definitely a great start to the weekend if you ask me! Also, feel free to send me photos of your gnome hats should you decide to do my mom hack! lol.

Cheers,

The Hustling Mama

    • Hahah I feel like that’s the universal child behavior! Not gonna lie, that’s tempting for me too!! I usually get chocolate covered raisons and Twizzlers (eww, I know) ONLY when I go watch movies in the theaters 😀
