For as long as I can remember, our daughter Callie has been really into Darth Vader. My husband thinks it’s funny because she’s never seen the Star Wars movie, yet she’s somehow still drawn to the Dark Lord. Whether she was born with a black heart or not, we decided to surprise her with her very own pink Princess Darth Vader costume!
Thankfully we were blessed by the internet gods with some pretty cool ideas, however, we wanted to keep it truly simple and definitely affordable. Ya know, the way DIY traditionally use to be! So we grabbed some basic materials around the house as well as a few items purchased. Below is the list of materials you’ll need along with the step-by-step instructions. Enjoy!
Darth Vader Mask Tutorial
Step 1
Cover areas of the mask you don’t want spray painted with masking tape (ie eyes, the backside of the mouth section, and front ends of the head strap, nose tip, etc).
Step 2
Go outdoors and spray paint the front of the mask in two separate layers (make sure the first layer dries before applying the second layer to avoid paint clumps). Some people choose to use a primer before the main pink spray paint, but I chose not to. Also be sure to spray from a distance so the paint is evenly spread across the mask.
Step 3
Once the paint dries, carefully remove the masking tape from the mask completely. Feel free to feel proud of what you’ve done so far because the rest is optional!
Step 4 (optional moving forward)
Using one of Callie’s plastic tiara we picked up a dollar store, we hot glued it to the top of the Darth Vader mak. I decided to snap the ends because it was too long and stuck out. We then added a princess veil by using pink tulle (can be found at any craft store, Target, and even Walmart for a few dollars. If you don’t have time, you can order it from here on Amazon).
DARTH VADER ARMOR TUTORIAL
Step 1
Cut strips of the masking tape to create Darth Vader’s digital armor panel on his chest. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can easily add a belt as well!
Step 2
Use your markers to color in the different buttons and lights on the armor panel. I used the colors red green, and grey.
EXTRAS
Complete the Darth Vader look with a matching pink cape and pink lightsaber! I ended up ordering a pink satin cape on Amazon and then just spraypainted a toy lightsaber we won at the county fair last year.
And there you have it! A complete tutorial to a pink Princess Darth Vader! There are so many wonderful things about this project that I don’t know where to begin (but I’ll try!)
- It’s super easy to make
- Surprisingly affordable
- Will open your eyes to a whole new world of things that can be customized
- Dads obsessed with Star Wars will love this costume for their daughter(s)
- Men who don’t even have kids will suddenly imagine life with their future daughter(s)
- Will entertain the kids for long periods of time in the backyard
- Great photo opportunities
- The costume can be used for birthday parties, Halloween, attending Star Wars movie premiere, or really any day!
- You get the best reactions from strangers!
Enjoy the rest of the photos and my fun little tutorial video! It looks cute now, but it wasn’t so cute when I had a bunch of strangers walking by staring at me like a weirdo. Can’t a girl wear a robe outside of her home while dancing like a fool in front of her tripod in the middle of a dirty downtown alley in Los Angeles?!? Seriously, let’s take a moment to appreciate all that goes into being a content creator, k? Thaaaaaaannkkkss lol!
Hope everyone had a blast reading this post and don’t forget you can get a steal right now and get a Darth Vader mask in Target’s dollar section (for $3 though)! If you don’t care for savings and are all about convenience, you can hit up my Amazon page where you can easily shop all the things I’ve shared in my blog. Be safe this Halloween everyone!
Cheers,
